What to know

New York sets the fee: $21 for safety and emissions on most cars in Monroe County. The sticker is good for 12 months and shows the month it runs out.

Most failures are small fixes: a burned-out bulb, worn wiper blades, a tire with less than 2/32 of an inch of tread, or a check engine light, which fails the emissions part on its own.

What the inspection covers

  • Brakes, steering and suspension
  • Tires, lights, horn and wipers
  • Seat belts, mirrors and glass
  • Window tint on the front side windows
  • Emissions, read from the car’s computer

Questions

What do I need to bring?

The car and its registration. If you’ve just bought it, bring the paperwork from the DMV.

Can I come in early?

Yes. The new sticker runs 12 months from the day we inspect, so you give up whatever is left on the old one.

What if it fails?

You get the reasons in writing. Have it fixed here or anywhere you like, and the recheck here is free within ten days.

Sticker running out?

Come in on a weekday before 4. Most inspections are done in about half an hour.
